The Nautical School of Tampico is a higher education institution dedicated to the training of maritime professionals and the training of subordinate personnel
in the merchant navy and fishermen .
The Nautical School of Tampico was established on August 21, 1945, through a public deed and initially incorporated into the Civil Association called
"Higher Education and Scientific Research," aimed at establishing various schools under the name of the Institute of Science and Technology of Tampico.
Among them, the Nautical School of Tampico was officially recognized by the Ministry of the Navy and founded at the initiative of Captain Alt. Luis
Gonzaga Priego González, one of the pillars in the history of the Nautical School, who always expressed his concern for Tampico to have a school that would
train merchant mariners.
The Nautical School of Tampico began its courses on September 2, 1945 , alongside a respected Tampico institution, the Institute of Science and Technology
of Tampico, located at Mango Street #205, Altavista neighborhood, operating as one of the nautical schools in the country striving to open broad paths for
young people who feel the vocation to become merchant mariners.
From 1950, one of the aspirations of the school's directors was to have their own building.
Since its foundation, the school has remained in constant activity with no more interruption than the months of September and October 1955 when the
building of the Institute was occupied to accommodate more than 200 victims of the floods caused by hurricanes Hilda and Janet.
In 1962, the "Association of the Nautical School of Tampico A.C." was formed with the purpose of providing professional instruction to merchant mariners
without pursuing an economic character. This association was formed by people who cared about the school and were determined not to let it disappear. In
December 1967, the school moved to a rented building at Av. Hidalgo No. 501 for economic reasons.
Since 1967, the search for land to build the Merchant Nautical School of Tampico intensified. In 1969, the Secretary of the Navy, Admiral C.G. Luis M.
Bravo Carrera, during a work tour in Tampico, visited the ideal land for building the new Nautical School. These lands were gained from the Carpintero
Lagoon, where the filled area for the new facilities of the Nautical School of Tampico was shown. In 1972, the Association of the Nautical School
disappeared, and the Trust for Training and Capacity Building for the Personnel of the National Merchant Marine (FIDENA) emerged, with the aim of
maintaining support and operation of the Merchant Nautical Schools of Tampico, Tamps.; Mazatlán, Sin.; and Veracruz, Ver .
In the same year, the I.M.N. Antonio Islas Soublette met with the President's Private Secretary , accompanied by a group of students, expressing their desire to
have their own building. The Secretary assured them that he would do his best to resolve the construction of the school.
Finally, on January 24, 1974, the dream came true , and the facilities of the Merchant Nautical School of Tampico were inaugurated, which, like the other two
schools, strengthens the culture to enhance the horizons of Mexico with capable mariners to enrich the maritime future of our homeland.
In 1978, the construction of two simulators , one for machines and one for navigation, began. In 1984, women were incorporated into the degrees of Officers
of the National Merchant Marine.
On June 1, 1979, the Merchant Nautical School of Tampico was honored by the President of the Republic, Lic. José López Portillo. On the institution's
anniversary, on September 2, 2006, it was announced that on August 26, the institution was registered with the name "Merchant Nautical School 'Captain Alt.
Luis Gonzaga Priego González'."
