The Nautical School in Veracruzis a higher education institution dedicated to
the training of maritime professionals and the training of subordinate personnel in the
merchant navy and fishermen.
It was founded in 1919, thanks to the efforts of Captain Alt. Fernando Siliceo y Torres, under the name "Escuela de Comercio y Náutica para la Marina Mercante
Nacional" (School of Commerce and Nautical for the National Merchant Marine). In 1924, its name was changed to "Escuela Náutica Mercante" (Merchant Nautical
School), and its activities were carried out in the lighthouse building directed by Captain Siliceo until his death in 1933. In January 1937, it closed its doors due to lack
of support.
On January 1, 1939 , it resumed its activities in the lighthouse building under the direction of Captain Alt. Marcelino Tuero Molina. In 1949, it established
itself at its current address, and on July 1, 1976, the boarding school at the institution was inaugurated.
OnFebruary 5, 1919, Captain of the Merchant Marine Don Fernando Siliceo y Torres,
a graduate of the Nautical School of Campeche, inaugurated the School of
Commerce and Nautical, a name that responded to a national need at the time. According to Article 32 of the Constitution, promulgated on February 5, 1917,
1917, the Mexican Navy was nationalized, and having Mexican nationality by birth was decreed as an indispensable condition to be a sailor..
Initially named Commerce and Nautical, the school was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the State Government of Veracruz. The institution had its first
location at Prim Street No. 39. Currently, the building belongs to a private individual as a residence and office.
The inauguration of the school took place in the presence of the Governor of the State of Veracruz, Civil and Military Authorities of the Port, members of the National
Chamber of Commerce, Director and Teachers of the School. The respective document was signed by General Cándido Aguilar, A. Rivera, F. Siliceo, J. Mercado; M.
Limón Uriarte, José T. Torres, Commodore Manuel Azueta and Rafael Montalvo, Captain de Navío Luis G. Izaguirre, M. Sánchez, G. E. González de Castilla, Alberto
Molina, Natalio Ulibarri; M. Michel; J.A. Palavicini; Domingo Kuri; Captain de Nav. Arturo Laphan; J. Brousset, Juan J. Rodríguez, Amaro Salazar, Irma Toledo; A.
Matienzo, Guillermo Bravo, A. Illades, M. Portunio Argüelles, Tristán Canales; V. Camporredondo; José C. Santos, and Carlos M. Carranza.
Later, the school changed its location to the Lighthouse Building, being subsidized by the Federal Government and the General Directorate of Studies of the State
Government. Three years after the death of its founder, Fernando Siliceo y Torres, in 1937, when the subsidy from the Federation was suspended, the school was
forced to close its doors, relocating its students to the Nautical School of Mazatlán. In 1939, at the behest of the Maritime Organizations of the Port of Veracruz, the
school reopened in the same Lighthouse Building,In 1945, by order of the President of the Republic, Manuel Ávila Camacho, the current building was constructed.
Finally, the school was inaugurated in 1950 by the President of the Republic, Lic. Don Miguel Alemán, with Captain Admiral Don Marcelino Tuero y Molina as the
director.
The flag ceremony of the Merchant Nautical School of Veracruz took place
on June 1, 1981, by the President of the Republic, Lic. José López Portillo..
